Bad news for African football: Libya has given up on organizing the African Cup of Nations in 2017. The reason: an “unstable security situation”, announced the Confederations of African Football (CAF) in a press release. “A Libyan delegation, led by the Minister of Youth and Sports and including the President of the Football Federation, notified this to the President of the Confederation of African Football, Issa Hayatou,” during a meeting on Friday at the headquarters Cairo of CAF, explains the African entity. Less than three years before the event, CAF immediately launched a call for applications from its 54 member federations. They have until September 30 to submit a file. CAF has already clarified that it would choose “a host country with most of the required infrastructure and facilities”. The CAF Executive Committee will choose the organizer of CAN 2017 “during 2015”.
