A promotion for Laura Chinchilla. The Costa Rican, President of her country from 2010 to 2014, is the new permanent observer of the IOC to the United Nations. She was appointed by the IOC President, Kirsty Coventry. She succeeds another IOC member, Luis Alberto Morenowho had been fulfilling this role since 2019.

The IOC obtained observer status in 2009This gives him the opportunity to attend and speak at meetings of the United Nations General Assembly. The then-President of the IOC, Jacques Rogge, emphasized that this was a " great recognition of the role that sport can play in building a peaceful world and better ».
