Kenya suspends 33 athletes

Doping

Never seen. Daily Nation reports that the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK) has sanctioned a record 33 athletes, all suspended for violating anti-doping rules. Unsurprisingly, the bulk of the troops come from athletics (26), but three other sports are concerned: basketball (3), rugby (3), and handball (1). Among the suspended athletes is Joshua Belet (photo above), 26, winner last year of the Amsterdam marathon (2 h 04 min 18 sec). Rugby player Brian Wahinya, who played for the national team, is also on the list. Basically, the ADAK announcement does not really constitute a surprise. It was even expected much earlier, at the end of last year, when the agency's general director, Sarah Shubutse, suggested that around fifty athletes were going to be suspended. But things dragged on. And the list was finally narrowed down. As a reminder, the political authorities of Kenya have strengthened the financial resources made available to ADAK to fight against doping, with a budgetary increase of 5 million dollars, after the threat made by World Athletics to suspend Kenya. According to the Kenyan daily, these greater resources allow ADAK controllers to travel more regularly to the country's training camps to carry out out-of-competition tests.
