Japanese athletes will display their carbon footprint

Paris 2024

For the Paris 2024 Games, the Japanese have decided to play the sustainability card to the fullest. The official equipment supplier of the Olympic delegation, Asics, unveiled the athletes' outfits on Wednesday April 17, 100 days before the event. For the first time, jackets, pants, t-shirts and polo shirts intended in particular for podium ceremonies and press conferences will be printed with a number indicating the quantity of carbon dioxide emitted during their production. For the warm-up suit jacket, for example, the figure of 8,8 kg of carbon dioxide equivalents will be indicated. For pants, this measurement drops to 5,5 kg. Comment from Makoto Ohori, Asics Apparel and Equipment Development Director: “ The Paris Games are billed as the most sustainable development-focused event in Olympic history. So we adhered to this concept. By determining the carbon footprint of each item and labeling it on products, we hope to increase transparency and raise environmental awareness among athletes. » The Japanese equipment manufacturer also explained that it had reduced carbon emissions by a third for the production of official outfits, compared to the Tokyo 2020 Games, thanks to massive use of recycled and lighter materials, and running its factory in Japan with a renewable energy source.
