
The International Paralympic Committee has appointed the Professor Wayne Derman as Medical Director (External). Head of the Department of Sports Medicine at Stellenbosch University, South Africa, He is no stranger to the IPC, having joined its medical committee in 2011. and that he was its president from 2023 to 2024. He recently held the position of IPC Medical Director for the Paris 2024 Paralympic GamesHe was also Chief Medical Officer for the South African team at the Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 Olympic Games, and for the South African Paralympic team at the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Games.
Mike Peters, IPC's chief executive, said his appointment was « an invaluable asset » for the organization : " As a member of the IPC Medical Committee during the COVID-19 pandemic, Wayne played a critical role in ensuring athlete safety through evidence-based protocols and collaborative decision-making. He consistently ensured that medical decisions prioritized athlete well-being, performance, and experience, which are at the heart of the Paralympic Movement. "As medical director, Professor Derman will oversee the IPC's medical strategy and research. He will also plan and coordinate the medical services for the Paralympic Games, in collaboration with local organizing committees.
