Gustave Eiffel's descendants go on the offensive

Paris 2024

The Games are over, but not the controversies. The latest: the decision by Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo to keep the Olympic rings on the Eiffel Tower, at least until the Los Angeles Games in 2028. The idea does not please everyone. The descendants of Gustave Eiffel, in particular, are strongly opposed to it and even say they are ready to take legal action. "We are very pleased that the rings have been associated with the Eiffel Tower for the duration of the Olympic Games, they explain in a press release. As heirs of Gustave Eiffel, the members of the Adge (Association of descendants of Gustave Eiffel) may be led to oppose any alteration that undermines respect for the work of their ancestor". After consulting a law firm, they point out that "The hanging of the Olympic rings induces a substantial modification both on the visual aspect but also on the symbolic aspect of the Eiffel Tower. Colorful, of a large size, placed in the privileged access axis to the tower, creating a strong imbalance, the rings substantially modify the very pure forms of the monument.. » Not wrong. The descendants of Gustave Eiffel also believe that the presence of the rings after the end of the Games is in contradiction with " the neutrality and meaning acquired over the years by the Eiffel Tower, which has become the symbol of the city of Paris and even of the whole of France throughout the world. They propose to the Paris city hall to " transmit symbolically" in Los Angeles by the end of 2024.
