Guatemala regains its colors

CIO

Good news for Guatemala: the IOC has lifted the suspension of its national Olympic committee. At least temporarily. The body had been suspended since October 15, 2022 due to external interference in its governance. A situation which threatened its presence at the Paris 2024 Games, and would have forced its qualified athletes to participate in the events under a neutral flag. Meeting since Tuesday March 19 in Lausanne, the IOC Executive Board decided to temporarily lift the suspension of the National Olympic Committee, “ in the interest of Guatemalan athletes”. A decision that the international body explains by “ positive developments over the past few weeks », including the meeting last month between Thomas Bach and the President of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo (photo above), but also the reinstatement of the NOC President, Gerardo Aguirre, and the executive committee. The national Olympic committee can therefore resume its activities. And the athletes are considering participating in the Paris 2024 Games under their colors and their flag.
