Glasgow 2026, record edition for para sport

The 2026 Commonwealth Games programme is now official. Ten different sports will be represented: artistic gymnastics, athletics, 3×3 basketball, bowls (a game of balls derived from pétanque), boxing, swimming, judo, netball, track cycling and weightlifting. More than 200 gold medals will be in play from July 23 to August 2, 2026 in Glasgow. Among the new features in athletics, thebig comeback of the mile (1 609 metres), who has been excluded from the Commonwealth Games since 1996. The program will be particularly rich for para athletes with 47 titles to be won, a record, in para athletics, 3×3 wheelchair basketball, para swimming, para bowls, para track cycling and para weightlifting.“I am proud that Glasgow 2026 will deliver the largest medal programme for para sport in the history of the Games and that the event plays an important role in the growth, support and promotion of para sport. Glasgow 2026 is a bridge to tomorrow's Commonwealth Games and we have a clear vision of what will be positively different", rejoices Phil Batty, general director of these Games. The menu promises to be plentiful in track cycling and swimming, where records for medals distributed will be broken. 56 finals will take place at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre by combining swimming (42) and para swimming (14). The Chris Hoy velodrome will be the scene of 18 medal races in track cycling and eight in para cycling. Another positive signal for disabled sport: the number of teams involved in wheelchair basketball will increase from six to eight, for both men and women.
