Richard Akpokavie was elected president of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) on Saturday. He obtained 44 votes, against 19 for his only opponent, Michael Aggrey. Akpokavie first led a sports career in hockey, even wearing the captain's armband of the national team, before getting involved in institutions and, among other things, taking over as president of the National Hockey Federation. He assumed the role of secretary general of the GOC for four years (2017-2021) and had run for the presidency for the first time four years ago. However, he had been beaten by Ben Nunoo Mensah by seven votes.
There is also change in the position of Secretary General, now occupied by Mohammed Muniru Kassim. On the other hand, Mawuko Afadzinu remains first vice-president and Frederick Otu Lartey second vice-president. Evans Yeboah, president of the National Badminton Federation, was elected treasurer.
