Germany wants the Olympics. Not something new. But, more surprisingly, she is eyeing the 2040 edition. The agency DPA reports that the federal government has declared itself in favor of a bid for the Summer Games and wants to sign a joint declaration with the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), interested states and cities. But, rather than the 2036 edition, which would mark a heavy anniversary, that of the Berlin Games in 1936, the authorities would consider positioning themselves for 2040. The Olympic and Paralympic event would thus mark the 50th anniversary of the fall of the Wall of Berlin and the reunification of Germany. “ The Olympic and Paralympic Games are a great opportunity for our country, said Nancy Faeser, Federal Minister of the Interior and Sports. The DOSB began a long consultation process last year with a view to an Olympic bid, but without deciding whether it should concern the Summer or Winter Games, and without opting for a particular edition either.
