Germany wants to take its time

Jeux Olympiques

Germany is not abandoning its plan to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games over the next decade, or even the next. But she moves forward without hurrying. Its national Olympic committee (DOSB) launched a national information campaign aimed at the general public last weekend. Named “ Your ideas. Your Games », it concerns the entire country, and not one or more targeted regions. On the program, around ten conferences open to all, dedicated to different aspects of the Games, including sport, the economy, sustainable development and the impact on society. They will be accessible live, in streaming, then viewable on demand from next month. Comment from Torsten Burmester, Chairman of the DOSB Board of Directors: “ Current polls show the candidacy's approval rating is high. But there remain some reservations that we want to dispel in presenting our arguments. It is also important to provide the public with comprehensive information about the new situation in hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games and the bidding process. The Games of the future will no longer be what we have known in recent years. » The results of this vast public campaign will be presented at the general assembly of the DOSB, scheduled for December 2, 2023. It should give rise to a vote by the members of the body on the financing of the candidacy campaign. A more successful project will be proposed in May 2024. A referendum in the selected region could take place at the end of next year, at the latest during the first half of 2025. Five regions were targeted by the DOSB: Hamburg, Berlin , Munich, Leipzig and North Rhine-Westphalia. There remains an unknown factor, but it is a big one: the edition of the Games for which Germany will try its luck. The DOSB has not yet decided between the Winter Games in 2034, 2038 and 2042, or the Summer Games in 2036 and 2040.
