Another Olympic medal will soon change hands. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) announced in a press release on Tuesday, September 3, that it had suspended Russian athlete Tatyana Tomashova (photo above) for a period of ten years. An analysis carried out at the end of 2021 of her samples, taken in June and July 2012, revealed the presence of anabolic steroids. Already sanctioned by a two-year suspension in 2008 with six other Russian athletes for "fraudulent substitution of urine", and excluded from the Beijing Games, Tatyana Tomashova sees her sentence increased by the CAS to a ten-year suspension. This new sanction will not change anything in her sporting career. The former Russian athlete, now aged 49, is no longer active. But the CAS decision is accompanied by the cancellation of her results between June 21, 2012 and January 3, 2015. She therefore loses her silver medal in the 1.500 m at the London Games. In the British capital, the double world champion in the 1.500 m (2003, 2005) had initially taken 4th place in the final, before being reclassified thanks to the disqualification for doping of the Turks Çakir Alptekin and Gamze Bulut for doping. Victorious on the track, Bahraini athlete Maryam Yusuf Jamal remains in gold, but Ethiopian Abeba Aregawi and American Shannon Rowbury climb one place. Subject to validation by the IOC, they will inherit the silver and bronze medals respectively.
