Not so common. The International Football Federation (FIFA) wants to discuss. It announced in a press release on Monday, October 14, that it wanted to "initiate a dialogue concerning article 17 of the Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players”, following the ruling of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) on 4 October in the Lassana Diarra case (pictured above), which found that legislation must change so that footballers are no longer at the mercy of their club for the duration of their contract. Emilio Garcia Silvero, FIFA's Director of Legal and Compliance, explains: “In the coming days, FIFA will formally invite the various stakeholders to provide their views on Article 17 of the RSTJ (Consequences of a breach of contract without just cause) and to suggest amendments. FIFA believes that the decision on the "Diarra" case represents an opportunity to continue the modernisation of its regulatory framework, which is one of the objectives set by the FIFA President since 2016."
