Evictions hit record high

Paris 2024

An indirect but predictable effect of the Paris 2024 Games: evictions have reached a record rate this year in the French capital and its suburbs. According to a report by the collective Revers de la médaille, published Monday, November 4, no fewer than 260 “informal” living sites – camps, shanty towns and squats – were cleared by the public authorities between April 26, 2023 and September 30, 2024. Over the same period, at least 19.526 people were evicted from their homes, an increase of 33% compared to the 2021-2022 period. For Paul Alauzy, the spokesperson for the collective, who is also the coordinator of Médecins du Monde, these exceptional figures are the result of the authorities' desire to make room before the Olympic and Paralympic Games. An " indelible stain " on the legacy of the event, he suggests. The collective explains that it requested a series of consultations with all parties involved in the organization of the Games, before the opening, in order to put in place a common plan to fight social exclusion. The meetings did take place, but they did not result in any concrete plan.
