David Lappartient bets on cross country to open the Winter Games to Africa

French Alps 2030

The program of disciplines which will appear in the 2030 Winter Olympics and Paralympicswill be fixed in the coming months. With new features? President of the CNOSF and the UCI, David Lappartient has shown his desire to see the appearance of cyclo-cross in the French Alps. On the sidelines of the World Championships in the discipline, which took place in Liévin (Pas-de-Calais), the leader reaffirmed his intentions. "The IOC had asked us to make a list that we wanted to include. With the challenges of climate change, we wanted to open up the spectrum, he explains to La Voix du Nord. There will of course be traditional snow sports but also those contested in winter. We see two of them: cyclo-cross and cross-country. One advantage is that you can put them on the same site. Another advantage is that open winter Olympic sports to other nations, I am thinking in particular of Africa for cross-country. And for cycling, it is an opportunity to bring in big stars". The discipline is carried by two stars of the peloton. On one side, the Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel, grandson of Raymond Poulidor. Seven-time cyclo-cross world champion, he also rouses the crowds on the road with a world champion title and six Monuments in the list. His great rival, the Belgian Wout van Aert, for his part, has three world titles in cyclo-cross, a Monument and nine stage victories in the Tour de France, among others. "We don't know when the decision will be made, I hope perhaps during the 2026 Games session", adds the candidate for the presidency of the IOC.
