Berlin Marathon sets world record

Athletics

The Berlin Marathon celebrated its 50th anniversary fittingly on Sunday, September 29. According to the organizers, the German event set a new world record for the number of finishers. No fewer than 54.280 runners crossed the finish line. The previous record – 54.175 – was held by the Paris Marathon last April. The Paris event itself had erased the total of 53.627 finishers recorded in New York in 2019. A very moving scenario: the last finisher of the 2024 Berlin Marathon was the German Peter Bartel, who went down in history for having been one of the finishers of the very first edition, organized in 1974. Now aged 82, he finished the event in 54.280th and last place (photo above).
