Australian footballers call for new stadium for Brisbane 2032

Olympics 2032

The Queensland Government has received a letter signed by fifteen professionnels football players from Australia. Among them, iconic figures such as Clare Polkinghorne, who holds the record for most caps in the history of the women's team (169), Elise Kellond-Knight (115 caps) or goalkeeper Mitchell Langerak, who played for Dortmund. All express their support for the project proposed by the Australian Football Federation and call for the construction of a new stadium in central Brisbane. They estimate that a "level 2" enclosure, with 15 20.000 to places, would be a major contribution to the legacy of the Brisbane 2032 Games. "We also confirm our support for the development of appropriate training infrastructure to accommodate participating teams during the Olympic tournaments and for serving the vast Queensland football community »they write.
Football Australia has notably recommended the construction of ten additional fields in Meakin Park, south of the city. Athletes note that "Queensland is the only state that has not reinvested the financial windfall" of the 2015 Asian Cup "in the development of football" and believe that the means are "insufficient to meet the needs of some 300.000 players today in the state, not to mention thousands more over the next decade". Queensland has launched a 100 day study last fall on the infrastructure of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The map of the sites, and therefore the decision on a potential new stadium, is expected by the end of March.
