Americans in court

United States

The players of the American women's football team, crowned world champions last July in France, are set: the lawsuit they are bringing against their federation will be judged on May 5, 2020. They are demanding equal pay with their male counterparts . Their complaint for discrimination was filed last March by 28 players. Since then, the American team has won a new world title, on July 7 in Lyon. The debate took on a global dimension, then a political one upon their return to the United States. But the discussions remain at a standstill. The announcement of the trial date, decided Monday by Federal Judge R. Gary Klausner in Los Angeles, comes a week after these talks were frozen. “We are delighted with the trial date, it will happen soon. We are eager to move forward on this issue. We are already looking ahead to May 2020, when the players will give their version of the facts, said Molly Levinson, one of the spokespersons for the American players. We hope that the world champions receive what they are legally entitled to: fair pay and working conditions, nothing less. » The trial is scheduled in the middle of the women's national team gathering to prepare for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games (July 24 – August 9).
