Women end the year with a bang in the Olympic movement. After Switzerland last week, another European nation has just written a new page in its history with the election for the first time of a woman as president of the national Olympic committee. Former multiple Olympic champion rower Katherine Grainger (pictured above), currently president of UK Sport, was elected on Thursday 28 November as president of the British Olympic Association (BOA). She will replace Hugh Robertson early next year, who has been in the chair since 2016. Katherine Grainger, 49, is the only British athlete to have won a medal at five successive Olympic Games. "It is a great honour to be elected President of the BOA, as the Olympic Games have been at the heart of my life for almost 30 years, she said in a press release. As Chair of UK Sport, I have seen first-hand the importance of collaboration across the impressive ecosystem that enables Olympic sport to thrive in the UK.” Sebastian Coe and Hugh Robertson, the last two BOA presidents, are both IOC members.
