60% of Berliners support the Games, according to a poll

In the absence of a referendum, Berlin is relying on opinion polls. The latest, conducted by the Dimap institute, shows broad support for the bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games. 1,200 Berliners were surveyed: 60% of them said they were in favor. to the project (38% answered "yes", 22% "somewhat yes"). Conversely, 18% said "no" and 16% "somewhat no".

The level of support is roughly the same across age groups: 63% of 18-29 years65% of 30-44 year olds, 58% of 45-59 year olds and 59% of those 60 and over answered "yes" or "somewhat yes". Mayor Kai Wegner welcomed this result: I am particularly pleased to see that so many young people support holding the Games in Berlin. This survey reinforces our approach: together with the Olympic Commissioner, we will continue our efforts to to convince the people of Berlin and the German Olympic Sports Confederation of the relevance of our vision of sustainable, modern and inclusive Games in Berlin. »

The survey also reveals avenues to explore in order to persuade more people: those undecided or opposed to the idea of ​​a candidacy were asked what might change their minds. 74% of them indicated they might be convinced if they received guarantees regarding the benefits of the Games for the economy, accessibility and
modernization73% might switch sides if they were assured that the Games would not be a waste of money, and 65% if the Olympic Games would not lead to a rent increase and the cost of living.
