Tokyo 2020 creates an Athletes' Commission

Communiqué

Tokyo, February 28, 2013 – Tokyo 2020's desire to put athletes at the center of the Games was further solidified today with the announcement of the creation of the Tokyo 2020 Athletes' Commission under the leadership of its President Yuko Arakida, the one of Japan's most famous Olympic medalists. The members of this new Athletes' Commission will provide their recommendations to ensure that athletes and their needs remain at the heart of the concept of the Tokyo 2020 Games.

The Athletes' Commission will draw on the ideas and experience of 25 Olympic and Paralympic athletes, including Mikako Kotani, a swimming bronze medalist at Seoul 1988 and Tokyo 2020 ambassador, and Junichi Kawai, a winning swimmer a total of 21 medals at the Paralympic Games. The president

Tsunekazu Takeda, IOC member and President of the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) and Tokyo 2020, said: “The establishment of the Tokyo 2020 Athletes’ Commission is an important event for our bid. By taking care to listen to the innovative proposals of former and current Olympic and Paralympic athletes, we wish to strengthen our project for the Olympic and Paralympic Families. The best ideas and advice from the Commission will be integrated into our project which we seek to continually improve in order to organize the largest sporting event in the world in 2020."

With athlete comfort first, Tokyo 2020 has prepared one of the most compact projects in Olympic history, with 28 of the city's 33 competition venues within a radius of just 8 km from the Olympic Village and Paralympic.
