Sport, a bridge for peace and African unity

Communiqué

On this April 6, 2026, a day dedicated to celebrating sport as a universal vector of development and peace, I wish to send, on behalf of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), a message of hope, unity and commitment to the entire African and global sports movement.

Sport transcends borders, cultures and differences. It constitutes a universal language capable of bringing people together, strengthening social cohesion and promoting the fundamental values of respect, solidarity and fraternity.

This year's theme: "Sport to build bridges and break down barriers"This resonates with particular force. In a world facing multiple challenges, sport remains a powerful lever for building inclusive, equitable, and peaceful societies. It offers every individual, regardless of origin, gender, or social status, an opportunity to express themselves, to surpass their limits, and to unite around common ideals.

In Africa, a land of youth and diversity, sport is more than ever an instrument of social transformation and a symbol of hope. It inspires our young people, strengthens the resilience of our communities, and contributes to the emergence of a future based on peace and sustainable development.

I invite all actors in the sports movement, governments, partners and African youth to redouble their efforts to make sport a true bridge between cultures and a bulwark against all forms of division.

Together, let us make sport a driving force for unity, a catalyst for peace and a pillar of sustainable development, in Africa and around the world.

So, let's raise our voices and our hearts to celebrate the sport that unites, inspires, and transforms!

Long live sport, in the service of peace and development!

Hon. Mustapha Berraf
