Panam Sports held its General Assembly this weekend in Lima, Peru. This is a crucial event for the American Olympic Movement. The Lima 2027 Pan American Games occupied a large part of the agenda, with the organizing committee delivering a detailed presentation. Several strategic votes were also on the agenda.
Lima at work
As host of the 2019 Games, Lima has placed the 2027 edition within a legacy strategy. The sports program was confirmed in May, and the organizing committee is now focusing on everything else. We work on infrastructure, technology, transportation, accessibility, medical services, accommodation, and logistics. We face challenges, and we will address them with urgency and professionalism. Our commitment is not to hide the difficulties, but to solve them. " assumed the president of Lima 2027, Oscar Fernández.
The organizing committee has already recruited more than 54.000 volunteers, with the goal of reaching 70,000. It has presented its accommodation plan: more than 5.600 athletes in the Pan American Village, just over 2.000 in satellite accommodations, and finally, hotels in Lima, to house more than 17.000 athletes and delegation members. Regarding transportation, discussions are underway with municipalities to establish a dedicated lane for the Pan American Games on five main avenues, with the aim of facilitating athletes' travel to the competition venues. This lane will be open for 33 days, from July 10 to August 11, 2027, a much longer window than the Games themselves (July 23 to August 8, 2027).
Coventry as guest
The General Assembly elected the host of the 2029 Pan American Junior Games: after the presentation of each bid, the vote crowned Rosario (Argentina), competing against Guatemala. Renzo Manyari (Peru), Maria José Alcalá (Mexico), and Alicia Masoni de Morea (Argentina) were also elected as members of the ANOC Executive Board until 2030. Kirsty Coventry traveled to the event, demonstrating her commitment to all stakeholders in the Olympic Movement. She had previously participated in the General Assembly of the Oceania National Olympic Committees (ONOC) in May in Auckland, and in that of the European Olympic Committees in June in Budapest. In her speech, she emphasized the strategic alignment between the IOC and Panam Sports.
« With “Fit for the Future,” we paved the way for our Olympic Movement. With “Forward Together,” you are writing the next chapter of Panam Sports. The names may be slightly different, but the responsibilities remain the same. The spirit is the same. Because the future of sport doesn't happen on its own. It's something we have the honor of shaping—through the decisions we make, the values we uphold, and the athletes we support. "The IOC president will return to the continent soon enough, but further north, with the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games in less than two years now:" For athletes across this continent, LA28 is not a distant dream. It's a journey that has already begun. It's already underway. »
