On August 1, 1976, Montreal celebrated the conclusion of its first Olympic Games. The city is celebrating this 50th anniversary this summer. On Saturday, Olympic Park will host a free concert featuring artists Loud, Ariane Moffatt, Les 7 Doigts, Robert Charlebois, and Dubmatique. Gymnast Nadia Comăneci, a major star of the 1976 Games, will also return to Montreal. She will meet 50 people with the same first name as her, born between 1976 and 1978, for "the great Nadia gathering." This unique initiative celebrates the impact of the Romanian athlete.
Various exhibitions highlight the importance and legacy of these Games, notably "Montreal 1976: An Olympic Event" at the McCord Stewart Museum. Of the 24 competition venues used in 1976, 21 are still in operation. The Olympic Stadium still has a bright future ahead: its roof is being replaced, and the Quebec government has just given the green light to further modernization work. The stands will be redesigned to bring spectators closer to the field and offer a more immersive experience. The interior spaces and hospitality areas will also be renovated. Discussions are underway with professional sports teams and promoters, confirming the potential appeal of a modernized venue in the heart of a metropolis renowned for its ability to host large-scale events ».
Montreal recently secured the hosting of the third stage of the Olympic qualifying series for Los Angeles 2028, with beach volleyball, BMX freestyle, flag football, and skateboarding on the program in June 2028. Why not another Olympic bid… This winter, the CEO of the Canadian Olympic Committee, David Shoemaker, reminded everyone that the importance of hosting the Olympic Games in Canada ": " This is something we really want to do. It would help us achieve several different goals. In particular, securing investment for our infrastructure, which we desperately need.
