Things didn't drag on. One week to the day after Beijing's resignation, Lausanne was designated to host the next edition of SportAccord. It will take place in the Olympic capital on the initial dates, from April 19 to 24, 2020. Very strong.
Four years after the 2016 edition, the Swiss from the canton of Vaud will do it again. They will do it again with firefighter manners. In 2016, Lausanne replaced Sochi, Russia, which was supposed to host the international convention for three consecutive years. After a 2015 edition marked by an attempted coup by Marius Vizer, the president of the International Judo Federation (IJF), the Russians had put their thumbs up. Lausanne had inherited the event.
The scenario repeats itself this year. But, this time, the Swiss are recovering SportAccord two months from the date. The city authorities applied even before Beijing's official renunciation. They confirmed their intention.
The next world sports summit will take place at the SwissTech Convention Centre, where SportAccord had already taken place in 2016. The complex hosted the IOC session at the start of the year.
Comment from Raffaele Chiulli, president of SportAccord: “ Lausanne is a privileged meeting place for sports and economic leaders. We look forward to presenting another successful SportAccord in this dynamic city and in this short time"
« As the Olympic capital, Lausanne is proud to host the 2020 edition of SportAccord and looks forward to supporting the organizers to make this event a major success, explains the mayor of Lausanne, Grégoire Junod. We will open our doors to the international sports family with great pleasure. »
By inheriting SportAccord, Lausanne gets the full package, including the general assembly of ASOIF (association of international summer Olympic sports federations), and that of GAISF. A habit.
Less than two months before the event, the SportAccord event in Lausanne now resembles a speed race. Organizers said that partners, exhibitors and delegates registered in Beijing would be contacted soon. Pre-registrations will be open from Monday February 24.
With this new event, the sports calendar in Lausanne adds a new line. After the Winter Youth Games, in January, the Swiss city will host the ice hockey and pétanque world championships.
