Would Europe be the last continent to want to welcome the world's winter sports elite? The International Ski Federation (FIS) has published the (short) list of applications for the Worlds in 2025. Like the Winter Games in 2026, the only countries to have submitted a file are all European.
For the 2025 Alpine Ski World Championships, a pre-Olympic year, we are jostling in the starting booth. The Swiss resorts of Crans Montana, German Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and Austrian Saalbach are in competition.
The host city will be chosen by the FIS Council during its congress in May 2020 in Royal Cliff, Thailand. It will succeed Méribel-Courchevel, the two French resorts designated to host the Alpine Ski Worlds in 2023. The last edition of the world event took place at the start of the year in Are, Sweden. The next one will be held in 2021 in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. Europe, always.
Same trend for the three other Worlds proposed by the FIS for the year 2025. But, this time, the Council of the international organization will not have to debate. A single file has been submitted for the Nordic Ski World Championships. It is worn by Trondheim, Norway. Only one, also, is in the race for the freestyle, snowboard and freeski Worlds. It was filed by the Russian city of Krasnoyarsk. Finally, the Czechs from Harrachow are the only candidates for the Ski Flying Worlds in 2025.
Worrying? Officially, no. Gian Franco Kasper, FIS President, is delighted to “ to see such interest in the organization of our flagship events. All candidates have the potential and experience to organize events at the highest level. » But North America has not organized the Alpine Ski World Championships since Beaver Creek in 2015. In Asia, the last edition dates back to 1993, the year when the Japanese resort of Morioka hosted the event.
