In Rome, 85% of residents want a candidacy

The Italian bid for the 2024 Games may not be over. The day after the announcement by the mayor of Rome, Virginia Raggi, of her refusal to engage in the adventure, a national association for the defense of consumers and the environment, Codagons, launched an appeal to the Municipal Council of the Italian capital so that he reconsiders the position of the city. Carlo Rienzi, the president of Codagons, explains that he requested the immediate organization of a meeting between the Rome City Council and CONI, a meeting that he considers necessary before the city councilors are invited to vote on the Rome project 2024.

At the same time, an opinion poll reveals that 85% of Romans would today be in favor of a candidacy for Rome for the 2024 Games. A very unexpected result, the highest since the start of the Olympic and Paralympic project.

Giovanni Malago, the president of CONI, also indicated that he did not rule out taking Virginia Raggi to court, the mayor of Rome having put an end to a project financed in part by public funds. But Giovanni Malago specifies that it will be up to the government, in particular Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and his Minister of the Economy, to decide whether to initiate proceedings against the leader of the 5 Star Movement.
