Worlds under threat from the variant Omicron

IWF

After the Winter Universiade in Lucerne and the Men’s World Squash Championships in Kuala Lumpur, a third international event in December is in danger of being cancelled. The World Weightlifting Championships, scheduled to start on 7 December in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, are also under threat of cancellation. According to a source inside the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), the situation has been monitored daily since the beginning of the week. Uzbekistan has already announced its decision to suspend all flights with Hong Kong, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania and South Africa from 3 December. All residents of these countries, but also people who have recently visited them, are banned from entering Uzbekistan. In addition, travellers arriving from Egypt, Israel, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic will be subject to a 10-day quarantine. In such a context, it seems difficult for the IWF to maintain a world event that would be deprived of a large part of the competitors. China has already announced that it will not participate in the World Championships in Tashkent because of the health crisis.
