World Rugby double sanctions

World Rugby is joining the movement. The international body announced in a press release that its executive committee, meeting on Monday 28 February, had decided to further strengthen its sanctions against Russia and Belarus. “To protect the rugby family and take a strong stance against the conflict in line with recommendations by the International Olympic Committee (IOC),” World Rugby explained. The sanctions are twofold: a full and immediate suspension of Russia and Belarus from all international rugby and cross-border club rugby activities until further notice; and the full and immediate suspension of the Russian Rugby Federation, also until further notice. The decision of World Rugby’s executive committee is likely to spell the end of Russia’s chances of hosting a future World Cup. The country had been eyeing the men’s World Cup in 2027, but also the next one in 2031, the first of which was likely to be hosted by Australia.
