The road cycling world championships are heading for the Persian Gulf. At its annual congress in Glasgow on Thursday August 3, the UCI awarded the 2028 event to Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. With this decision, the body chaired by Frenchman David Lappartient respects the alternation of continents, often abandoned in the rest of the Olympic movement. After Zurich next year, followed by Rwanda in 2025, the Road World Championships will be held in Montreal (Canada) in 2026. The following year, the UCI will bring together all its disciplines for the 2027 “Super Worlds” – the second in history after Glasgow 2023 (August 3 to 13) – in the French region of Haute-Savoie. With Abu Dhabi in 2028, the road world championships will make their third foray into Asia, following Japan in 1990 and Qatar in 2016. The capital of the United Arab Emirates will also host the track World Championships in 2029.
