World Cross Country Championships postponed for one year

A new twist in the international athletics calendar. World Athletics has announced the postponement of the next World Cross Country Championships. They should have taken place on February 19th, 2022 in Bathurst, Australia. They have been postponed for one year because of the strict travel restrictions imposed by the New South Wales authorities. In practice, the 14-day quarantine requirements for international visitors to Australia are not really compatible with a one-day event, World Athletics says. Australia’s borders are currently closed to international visitors, and there is no prospect of them opening in time to welcome the 550 athletes, from more than 60 countries, expected at the Worlds in Bathurst. The competition is now scheduled for February 18th, 2023. There will be five events on the programme: the elite men’s and women’s races (10 km), a mixed relay (8 km), and two races for U20 athletes (8 km for men, 6 km for women). The last edition of the World Cross Country Championships was held in 2019 in Aarhus, Denmark.
