The new boss of European basketball is Spanish. Jorge Garbajosa (pictured above), 45, world champion in 2006, who played for the Toronto Raptors in the NBA, has been elected president of FIBA Europe. With 35 votes, he beat his only rival for the top job, Jean-Pierre Siutat (15 votes), the president of the French Basketball Federation (FFBB). The former Spanish player succeeds Turkey’s Turgay Demirel, who was first elected to head the continental body in 2014 and then re-elected in 2018 for a second term. Jorge Garbajosa has been president of the Spanish federation since 2016, but will step down in the coming days. During the same general assembly, held in Munich, FIBA Europe appointed a new treasurer, Grzegorz Bachanskia from Poland. His only rival, Austrian Gerald Martens, withdrew his candidacy shortly before the election.
