Vaccination will not be a condition

The Japanese authorities insist: the vaccination of accredited persons will not be a condition for the holding of the Tokyo Games in July and August 2021. A government spokesman, Chief of Staff Katsunobu Kato, repeated it on Tuesday January 19th, at a press conference. “We are considering comprehensive measures to be able to organise safe and secure Games, but we will not make vaccines a condition for their holding”, he explained. With 184 days to go, the Japanese government is no different from the IOC position, expressed repeatedly by Thomas Bach in recent months. The German leader insisted that athletes would be encouraged to get vaccinated. He suggested that the IOC could take care of all or part of the vaccination. But Thomas Bach hammers it: vaccination will not be compulsory to participate in the Tokyo Games.
