Salt Lake City seduces its troops

Salt Lake City’s bid for the Winter Games has not yet formally made its choice between the 2030 and 2034 editions, but it can count on strong public support. According to a poll conducted for the Deseret News and the Hinckley Institute of Politics, an overwhelming majority of Utah residents are in favor of hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games for the second time, after the 2002 edition. As many as 79% of those surveyed said they were in favor of the Salt Lake City project, compared to only 16% who said they were against and 5% who were undecided. This rate of support in Utah is significantly higher than in the potential rivals of the American bid, Sapporo and Vancouver, where opinion polls have never obtained such a majority in favour of an Olympic bid. But a 2017 poll showed even higher support in Utah, with 89 percent in favor. The opinion survey released this week was conducted by Dan Jones & Associates from July 13-18, 2022 among 801 registered voters in Utah.
