USA can dream

USA Rugby

The Rugby World Cup could soon be heading to America. According to the sport’s national governing body, USA Rugby, its feasibility study for a World Cup in 2027 or 2031 has been formally approved by World Rugby. This is a first step, but a crucial one. According to USA Rugby, the United States is determined to have its cake and eat it too, by bidding for the men’s World Cup in 2027 and 2031, and the women’s World Cup in 2029. For the first of these three editions, in 2027, Australia is the clear favourite and seems to have already won the race. The United States could therefore instead be designated for the World Cup in 2031, a competition also coveted by Russia. “The next exciting steps are just beginning as we plan the campaign,” USA Rugby chief executive Ross Young said in a statement. World Rugby is due to announce the hosts of the 2027 and 2031 men’s and 2025 and 2029 women’s World Cups in May 2022.
