US elected officials call for boycott

The pressure is mounting in the United States. For the second week in a row, a member of the House of Representatives has taken a stand against holding the 2022 Winter Games in China. John Katko, an elected Republican from New York state, wrote to Joe Biden asking the US president to boycott the upcoming Winter Games. “The measures taken by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) are contrary to the values of the United States and its allies around the world”, he wrote, referring to the treatment of Muslim Uighurs by the Beijing regime. “Participation in the Olympic Games organised in a country which openly commits genocide not only undermines these common values, but casts a shadow on the promise made to all those who campaign for free and just societies”. Last week, another Republican member of the House of Representatives, Mike Waltz (Florida), had already called on Joe Biden to consider a boycott if the 2022 Winter Games were held in China.
