Ukrainians prepare in Slovakia

The Ukrainian athletics team is heading for Slovakia. In a press release, World Athletics announced that its athletes will be wrapping up their preparations for the World Championships in Budapest on 19 August in Banska Bystrica. This last training camp before the departure for Hungary is financed by the World Athletics Ukrainian Fund and the IOC Solidarity Fund. The Ukrainian delegation housed in Slovakia includes 40 athletes and officials. World Athletics explains that it has also provided additional accommodation for three athletes and their families for an extended period in Bankska Bystrica, from 1 June to 30 September. The aid for Ukrainian athletics, initiated last year by World Athletics and the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), benefited two athletes who won medals at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon: Yaroslava Mahuchikh in the women’s high jump (silver), and Andriy Protsenko in the same event, but in the men’s event (bronze). Through its Ukraine Fund, World Athletics distributed more than $220,000 last year and $190,000 this year. The IOC, for its part, made an additional contribution of $20,000 last year to support the Ukrainian team at the Under-20 World Athletics Championships in Cali.
