Ukrainian opens the series. World Athletics announced on Monday 28 November the name of the first winner of its annual trophies for 2022. It concerns the category of coaches. A sporting as well as a political choice, the body has designated Ukrainian Gennadii Zuiev (photo above). World Athletics explains that the former high jumper, who became a coach in 1999, has continued to accompany his best athlete, Andriy Protsenko, despite the difficulties and insecurity in the country. The 34-year-old Andriy Protsenko won bronze in the high jump at this year’s World Outdoor Championships in Eugene and then at the European Championships in Munich. The coach and his athlete both live in the Ukrainian region of Kherson. They spent almost five weeks under Russian occupation in March and April, improvising their training with home-made equipment. The Coaching Achievement trophy is the first of 10 awards unveiled by World Athletics for 2022. The names of the World Athletes of the Year, both male and female, and the revelations will be announced on Monday 5 December.
