Ukraine could join the pair

World Cup

Announcement? If the Spanish side is to be believed, Ukraine could be included in the joint bid of Spain and Portugal for the 2030 World Cup. “The inclusion of Ukraine in our Iberian bid is a possibility,” said Spanish government spokeswoman Isabel Rodriguez on Tuesday 4 October after a council of ministers meeting. “There will be a press conference tomorrow to discuss this possibility. What I can tell you is that the government will obviously support the inclusion of Ukraine in our Iberian bid for an important reason: in this context, linking sport to peace is always good news.” At this stage, the prospect of the Spain-Portugal pairing, supported by UEFA in the race for the 2030 World Cup, becoming a trio with the addition of Ukraine still seems very uncertain. Plunged into conflict for more than seven months, Ukraine is expected to rebuild everything. But the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has confirmed that a press conference will be held on Wednesday 5 October at UEFA’s headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. The president of the body, Luis Rubiales, will be present, accompanied by his Portuguese counterpart, Fernando Gomes. And according to the British daily The Times, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has given the green light for Ukraine to join Spain and Portugal in their joint bid for the 2030 World Cup.
