Times are tough for Ugandan soccer. AFP reports that the men’s national team – the Cranes – will not be able to participate in the next edition of the African Nations Championship (CHAN), scheduled for January 13 to February 4, 2023 in Algeria. It simply does not have the financial means. “A difficult decision has been taken to withdraw the Cranes from the CHAN 2023 because in the absence of funds, there is no other option,” explained Moses Magogo, president of the Uganda Football Federation. “It is a very sad situation, especially for the players, the coaches who led the team, as well as for the fans. It is a decision that we have taken in pain“. Uganda had qualified for the CHAN 2023, where they were to face the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ivory Coast and Senegal in the group stage. The African Nations Championship (not to be confused with the CAN, the African Cup of Nations) brings together 18 teams that play without their internationals playing outside the continent.
