Trade unions want to visit the construction sites

The public establishment in charge of the delivery of the works for the Paris 2024 Games, including the athletes’ village and the aquatic centre in Seine-Saint-Denis, has been singled out by the unions. Several of them were received in a delegation at their request on Monday 6 December at the headquarters of SOLIDEO. Their representatives denounce the impossibility of visiting the construction sites. “We have already visited construction sites in Qatar for the World Cup, and we have other visits planned. And here, none,” said the general secretary of the BWI, the international union of wood and construction workers, Filipino Ambet Yuson, quoted by AFP, before the meeting. The foreign unions – Swiss, Romanian and Ukrainian – also want to know a little more about the proportion of posted workers likely to be working on the various sites. “We don’t know anything, neither which company is working on which site, nor who is being seconded,” explained Jean-Pascal François, the administrator of the CGT-Construction. As a reminder, the Paris 2024 OCOG adopted a social charter in 2018, prepared and drafted in collaboration with the trade unions. A first for an Olympic Games organising committee. But Jean-Pascal François told AFP: “We have to check that the charter is respected. It was a cordial walk this morning, but we didn’t get a response to our request to visit the construction sites. We were told that these are hyper-sensitive sites and that as such we cannot let just anyone in.
