Three options to replace offshore racing

Offshore racing has not yet been officially removed from the Paris 2024 Olympic program, but World Sailing has already found alternatives. The international body has received 26 submissions, proposed by its officials, class associations, committee chairmen and council. They have been analyzed by the President of World Sailing, Quanhai Li from China, and by the Board of Directors. At the end of a meeting held on Friday, April 30th, three proposals were approved: individual kitesurfing for men and women (Formula Kite), 470 for men and women, and mixed Laser (ILCA 6). Presented as a possible option, the Finn was not retained. This Series is however on the agenda of the Tokyo Olympics. Next step: the Statutes, Events and Equipment Committees will meet on May 10-11th, 2021 to examine these three proposals and present their respective recommendations to the Council. The World Sailing Council will then meet on May 14th, 2021 to vote on the three approved submissions. Two alternatives from offshore racing, ranked in order of preference, will finally be submitted to the IOC before the deadline, which is on May 26th, 2021.
