Three billion people watched the Games

The health crisis does not change anything: the Olympic Games remain a heavyweight in the sports world. According to an independent survey of 32,055 people in 17 countries conducted by Publicis Sport & Entertainment, the Tokyo Games were watched by 3.05 billion viewers worldwide last summer. The figure was released by the IOC on Wednesday 8 December, on the second day of its Executive Board meeting. Official coverage on the digital platforms of the event’s broadcast partners generated 28 billion video views, an increase of 139% compared to the Rio 2016 Games. Television coverage also reached record levels, up 33% compared to Rio 2016. Digital production was also up 34%. Another independent consumer survey found that the Olympic Games remain the most attractive sports and entertainment event in the world. More than half of those surveyed (59%) believe that the Tokyo Games were a “light at the end of the tunnel”, a phrase used repeatedly by the IOC prior to the event, as opposition to the event grew in Japan.
