The World Cup from Dubai

Qatar 2022

With less than 100 days to go before the opening of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar (20 November to 18 December), the big manoeuvres are being prepared in the Gulf. According to AFP, Dubai airport could play a major role in the arrival and movement of fans from abroad. “We are currently putting in place procedures that should make it much easier for people to move between the two countries,” said airport manager Paul Griffiths. Figures are not yet finalised, but Dubai is expected to have a “large number” of daily flights with Doha during the 2022 World Cup. Under agreements already in place between Qatar and its neighbouring countries, including the United Arab Emirates, fans will only need to check in and out of Dubai online, without having to go through the usual procedures. Paul Griffiths believes that Dubai will become a hub during the World Cup, not only for passenger transit, but also for accommodation. The very high hotel prices in Doha could encourage fans to stay in Dubai and travel back and forth to watch the games.
