The pace is quickening in Budapest in the run-up to the World Athletics Championships (19 to 27 August 2023). With 11 days to go before the opening ceremony, the Hungarian organisers unveiled the medal designs on Tuesday 8 August. They are intended to break with tradition, with the emphasis on the host country. On the front, the 2023 Worlds logo is accompanied by the Statue of Liberty, one of the Hungarian capital’s most recognisable monuments. The reverse of the medal features the brand new National Athletics Centre, similar to a crown, and the track where the 2023 World Championships will be held. For the first time in the history of the World Championships, the coaches of the athletes on the podium will also receive a medal. Another first will be the setting up of the Medals Plaza, outside the stadium, where the daily podium ceremonies will be held.
