The Games recorded 863 COVID-19 cases

The books are closed. Three days after the end of the Tokyo Paralympic Games, Japanese organisers announced on Wednesday, September 8th, that they had registered a total of 863 COVID-19 cases among those accredited to the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo. The count began on July 1st, 2021. It was finalised on Wednesday, September 8th, with the departure of the last accredited persons. In detail, 547 people who took part in the Olympic Games and 316 people who took part in the Paralympic Games were infected, before, during or after the event. Of these, only 41 were athletes, 50 were media and 29 were from the organising committee. Of these, approximately 30% (254 cases) involved accredited persons from abroad. Finally, 53 cases were found among people living in the athletes’ village.
