The dates are known

A new box has just been ticked in the preparations for the 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal. The IOC Executive Board, which met at the beginning of the week in Lausanne for the last time this year, validated the dates of the event, the first Olympic event in history held in Africa. Initially scheduled for 2022 but postponed by four years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the YOG will be held from 31 October to 13 November 2026. The dates were chosen by the IOC taking into account “school and university timetables, in order to accommodate at best with athletes’ school programme, weather conditions and other international sports events and celebrations”. Dakar 2026 will coincide with African Youth Day on 1st November, an important celebration in Senegal. It should give schoolchild more time to participate in and contribute to the YOG. The next step is to finalise the sports programme. According to the IOC, this is currently underway, in close collaboration with the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) and the international federations.
