The clouds are gathering

The future looks bad for weightlifting. Meeting virtually on Wednesday 25 November, to prepare for its meeting next month, the IOC Executive Board once again looked into the discipline’s thick dossier. Obviously, the latest exhibits do not really encourage the IOC “government” to show leniency. In its report, the Executive Board explains that it was “made aware of a number of anti-doping rule violations committed by Vietnamese athletes. These violations could jeopardise the participation of Vietnamese weightlifters in the Tokyo 2020 Games”. Thomas Bach and the other members of the executive board also coughed when they learned of Maxim’s re-election last weekend as President of the Russian Weightlifting Federation. Agapitov. “He will run for president of the European Weightlifting Federation in April 2021, with an election to be held in Moscow”, said the IOC. Before clarifying: “When Maxim Agapitov was an athlete, he tested positive in 1994 and was banned from competitions for two years”. Unfortunate.
