The 2026 edition could be postponed

Will the next edition of the Commonwealth Games be postponed for another year? The scenario is now on the table. And it may well stay there. Meeting this week in Singapore, the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) discussed at length the 2026 edition of the multi-sport event, initially awarded to Victoria, but now without a host since Australia withdrew its bid in July. Katie Sadleir, Executive Director of the CGF, explained to the media: discussions are continuing with Australia to find an alternative to Victoria, but she will need to obtain support and guarantees from the government. Not a foregone conclusion. The Briton also acknowledged the existence of conversations with “three other regions“, but without naming them, merely specifying that these exchanges were at a preliminary stage. In any case, things are moving slowly, and no decision will be taken before the beginning of next year. With the deadline for 2026 becoming very tight, the CGF acknowledges that it is seriously considering the possibility of postponing the next edition by one year.
