Ten months after the Beijing 2022 Winter Games, Switzerland has won another medal. In bronze. The Swiss Olympic Committee announced that Fanny Smith from Vaud (pictured above), who was initially placed third in the final of the skicross event but downgraded for interfering with Germany’s Daniela Maier, will get her bronze medal back. An amicable procedure had been initiated between the two young women before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). It resulted in an agreement between all parties, including Swiss Olympic, the German Olympic Committee and the two national ski federations. Daniela Maier and Fanny Smith were both ranked third. In the women’s skicross final at the Beijing 2022 Games, the two athletes had made contact in a home stretch. After a lengthy review of the video footage, officials ruled that the Swiss athlete had deliberately made a skiing mistake and deliberately impeded her competitor by touching her. But Fanny Smith had herself been impeded by Canada’s Marielle Thompson. The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) then allowed an appeal by the Swiss side, but the IOC did not change the ranking.
